Choosing your options is an exciting and important step in your school journey, and we want to make sure you feel informed, confident and supported as you make your decisions.

Our Virtual Options Event has been designed to help you explore the subjects on offer and understand what each course involves. You’ll find a welcome video from our Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher, alongside the options boxes and a detailed overview of every subject.

Each subject page includes insights from teachers and students, giving you a real sense of what lessons are like and what you can expect from the course. There’s also a FAQs section to help answer common questions, as well as clear guidance on next steps and how to make your final choices.

We encourage you to take your time exploring the event, watch all the subject videos, and discuss your options with your family and teachers. This virtual experience is here to support you in choosing the subjects that best match your interests, strengths and future aspirations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which subjects are compulsory in Years 10 and 11?

All students must study the core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, and Science. In addition, PE and PSHE are also compulsory, although they do not lead to a GCSE qualification.

How many option subjects do I get to choose?

At BES, students choose four option subjects, alongside their compulsory subjects.

Do I need to take a subject at GCSE if I plan to study it at A Level?

Not necessarily, sometimes you can do an A Level without having studied the subject at GCSE. Typically, that would be subjects that are less commonly taught at GCSE level in schools, such as law, media studies, economics, psychology and religious studies, but it is also possible to pick up other subjects for post-16 study if you wish.

However, if you are already thinking ahead to what you might want to study in the future, and we do offer the subject, it would be sensible to choose it as the knowledge and skills you develop will give you a better chance of success at A Level.

All post-16 providers have different entry requirements for the courses they offer but we recommend you choose subjects that you enjoy and think you will be successful in, so that you are able to get the best grades possible.

What should I consider when choosing my options?

You should consider:

Subjects you enjoy and are good at
Subjects you may need for future careers or courses
The skills each subject develops
It’s important to choose a balanced range of subjects rather than selecting only what friends choose.

What is the EBacc, and do I have to study it?

The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) is a group of subjects including English, Maths, Science, a language, and either History or Geography. Some students choose to follow the EBacc pathway, but it is not compulsory.

Can I change my option choices later?

There may be a short period after options are submitted when changes can be requested. However, changes depend on timetabling, class sizes, and availability, so choices should be made carefully.

What happens if too many students choose the same subject?

Places for each subject are allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

What happens if not enough students choose a subject?

If a subject does not attract enough students, it may not run. In this case, students will be guided to choose another suitable option.
